Olympic medalist and boxing legend MC Mary Kom has issued a detailed clarification following widespread confusion and controversy over her recent social media statement.
Mary Kom clarified that her remarks were never meant to imply that her marriage was unsuccessful throughout. She stated that her marriage was stable and respectful for many years, and her comments were misunderstood and taken out of context.
Addressing the situation further, she revealed that after her divorce and a press release circulated against her in April 2025, she consciously chose to remain silent in public and media, maintaining dignity and restraint.
Mary Kom expressed disappointment that her words were misdirected on social media, creating an unfortunate narrative. She strongly clarified that she is not against youth culture, football culture, or football fraternity in any way.
“I am a boxer, but I deeply love football and enjoy playing it. My statement was never against any sport or any player,” she said.
She emphasized that every great athlete begins from the streets, adding that only through hard work and dedication do individuals become icons like Sunil Chhetri or Baichung Bhutia.
Mary Kom also clarified that her comments were purely personal, linked to emotional conflicts and long-standing pain. She admitted that the moment was emotionally overwhelming, bringing together suppressed pain, feelings of betrayal, and depression.
“I never intended to insult or demean any individual or community, especially the wider male community. My statement was not for all men and was never meant to promote any negative ideology,” she stated.
She concluded by sincerely apologising to those who felt hurt or disappointed and appealed to the nation for continued love, blessings, and support so she can continue serving the country and contribute more to Indian boxing.
